Virgil James Bowles, Sr., age 75, of Indianapolis, IN, died April 9, 2009. He was born April 27, 1933 in Glasgow, KY to Lige Payton and Bessie Mae (Nanny) Bowles, both whom have preceded him in death.

Virgil was a quality inspector for 41 years at the Ford Motor Company. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War obtaining the honorable rank of Sergeant.

Martial arts, in particular Judo, will miss this great spirit and true friend. Virgil taught Judo for over 40 years where he owned Virgil's Judo Barn, and also taught for Mudokwan Judo and Karate School for 27 years!

Virgil obtained the esteemed rank of Hachidan (8th degree black belt) in Judo, and was also one of three nationally to have the honor as Professor of Judo. He also has been entered into the Judo Hall of Fame. He was a member of the United States Judo Association (USJA) where he served as founding member and was on the Board of Directors. Virgil also served as a National Judo Referee.

Virgil also taught:

Judo at the UAW #1111;

Self-defense classes at IUPUI;

And he also taught at various YMCA's in Indiana.

Outside martial arts, Virgil was a Scout Master, an Eagle Scout, and taught guitar. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Jean (Harrod) Bowles; his children, Virgil James Bowles, Jr., Brenda Jean Bowles Harber, and Walter "Wally" Wayne Bowles; grandson, Joshua Payton Bowles and granddaughter, Amy Nicole Bowles.
