USA Judo and USJA Sign Agreement

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – USA Judo and the United States Judo Association announced this morning that the two organizations have signed an agreement to move forward and work together for the good of the sport and judo athletes in the United States. This announcement came following the signing of a document on Friday which outlines a working plan for moving into the future by the presidents of both organizations.

“It is obvious to all concerned, and more importantly to both of our organizations' leaderships, that we need better and more frequent communication and cooperation between our two groups,” said USA Judo President Lance Nading (Denver, Colo.)  “As the National Governing Body for the sport of judo, it is important for us to work with every group who can help us move the sport forward at all levels. The USJA has been around for a long time and has the grassroots infrastructure in many regions of the country that we do not. It is here where we believe the rubber meets the road and where we think we can work together to grow judo in this nation.”

USA Judo and USJA went through mediation that was mandated by a USOC-appointed panel after USJA filed a Section 11 complaint to attempt to replace USA Judo as the National Governing Body. The agreement that was reached was a result of two full-day mediation sessions in which both organizations' leadership worked diligently to settle differences and identify areas in which they could work together to promote American judo in the future.

“This agreement is a large step in the right direction with many more to come,” said USJA President Gary Goltz (Los Angeles, Calif.)  “We plan to develop a mutual strategy in order to leverage the combined strengths of our organizations. We look forward to our upcoming meeting of the top executives of USA Judo, the USJF and us [the USJA] to work out details of joint membership, rank and coach reciprocity with a commitment towards the spirit of cooperation."

Both organizations are appreciative to the United States Olympic Committee, and specifically its CEO Scott Blackmun (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and the USOC Associate General Counsel Gary Johansen (Colorado Springs, Colo.)  Mr. Johansen attended the last 12-hour session in order to see this issue settled amicably and to the betterment of the sport and the athletes.

During its recently completed Board of Directors meeting in Myrtle Beach, S.C., USA Judo also announced the restoration of points for place-winners at this year's first combined USJA/USJF Junior National Championships. This prestigious event will now have a five-point value on the USA Judo Junior Elite National Roster.
