          I’ll always remember the day I tested for shodan, nearly fifty years ago.  The test was at Uptown Dojo in Chicago in 1963.  After the testing, a high-ranking sensei came up to me and said, “Good test.  Now, you are shodan.  Now, you are ready to learn.”  He was telling me I had a simple grasp of the basics. The more I learn, the more I return to the basics.
